IMPORTANT
This is a limited version of CanonStudio. All the major color
managament functions are not available. As a result, the color of
your output might be bad with this limited version. In order to
get decent output now, do not increase the print resolution to
720dpi. Use the Gamma, Brightness and Ink Limit settings to
increase brightness if necessary.
Again, the registered CanonStudio version offers a color
managament that does give you powerfull control over the output.
Also, many color adjustments for the current Canon printers are
included.

CanonStudio
===========
This is the LIMITED VERSION of CanonStudio. You can use it for
printing pictures. Though, many functions have been disabled
forcing you to register and get the latest full featured version.
This program is included as free offer to all Canon users and is
not part of the main Canon drivers. Canon is not responsibel for
any support, update or warranty regarding CanonStudio.
In case you use CanonStudio register the program or this product
will most likely not be supported in the future (programs do cost
more than time to develop). Also, your shareware fee is my
motivation for enhancements. If you like, you may also buy the
commercial "Studio" printer software from your Amiga dealer
instead of registering CanonStudio. Studio does additionaly offer
you a nice printed manual, driver support and drivers for various
non-Canon printers.
What do you get additionaly with your registered version of
CanonStudio not available in the limited version:
- The first professional Color Management System (CMS) on the
Amiga. This system ensures that the colors printed match the
colors on the screen. Unlike similar systems on other computers,
all parameters of the CanonStudio Color Management System can be
adjusted by the user. There is no need for you to buy expensive
printer profiles or phosphor type files. The system can be
automatically adjusted to your printer using a scanner calibration
tool shiped with the registered version of CanonStudio.
- CMS printer profiles for all major Canon printers and paper
sorts are included.
- Image processing functions to improve output quality: blur,
sharpness, mirror, automatic contrast enhancement, and many more.
- ARexx support. Application programs can use CanonStudio for
printing in 24 bit using ARexx or a special Studio/CanonStudio
Server mode. Several applications already support CanonStudio's
server mode (XiPaint, PhotoWorX Pro, PageStream 3.x, Personal
Paint, ImageFX, Art Effects); many more will be released soon.
- Supports the printing of many graphics formats in portrait or
landscape mode without the need for much memory. Formats like
JPEG, IFF ILBM, IFF DEEP, GIF, PNG, PCX, Targa, OS 3.0 Datatypes,
and many more are supported.
- The CanonStudio picture printing program now offers output
modules. Output modules give you direct control over
CanonStudio's output device. This can be either the Workbench
printer device (as in this limited version), an IFF graphic file,
or a BJC printer. Each module has its own settings and
preferences, making switching between modules dead easy. The
registered version of CanonStudio ships with various BJC and BJ
Extended Emulation modules and an IFF ILBM output module.
Note: Output modules can improve output speed dramaticly.
- The poster printing function is also available in the registered
version.
- A printed manual. Don't expect a real printed manual. This
manual was printed using a normal 600dpi laser printer (on DIN A4
paper - no binding done). But it's FAR better than what you get
as readme file here and it's cheap.
- Registered users get an update service. You'll get an upgrade
notice if major changes have been made to CanonStudio.
Please note the features listed above are subject to change
without notice.
ATTENTION: We are planning a release of CanonStudio on CD ROM.
This would allow us to ship additional software. The price of the
CD ROM will most likely be equal to the disk version. So please
note if you would prefer a CD ROM of CanonStudio. In case the
CD ROM is available you will receive the CD ROM instead of the
floppy disk version. Note that the CD ROM will not include any
printed manual - instead will offer ready to print dumpfiles for
your printer. This safes us a lot of postage costs and thus makes
the CD-R more affordable.
You can register CanonStudio from (don't forget to note wich
printer you own and if you prefer CD ROM):

The PageStream CanonStudio driver
---------------------------------
The registered version of CanonStudio now ships with a driver for
the current PageStream 3.0i DTP program. Using this driver, you
can directly print from PageStream using the CanonStudio print
program with all it's features. The driver also adds a spooler to
the program.
Starting the CanonStudio program
--------------------------------
CanonStudio may be run from either the Workbench or a Shell. When
CanonStudio starts it looks for a file in the CanonStudio_Prefs
directory called CanonStudio.prefs which contains your most
recently saved settings for printing. If the settings file cannot
be found, CanonStudio uses its default internal settings. You can
override the internal default settings by saving the settings in a
file named DefaultSettings. The CanonStudio installation process
will actually save a DefaultSettings file if available for your
printer.
CanonStudio can be launched from the Workbench by double clicking
on its icon, or it can be run from a Shell. CanonStudio can be
started with various Tool Types or Shell arguments:
SETTINGS=File
File is the name of a settings file for CanonStudio preferences.
The default settings file is CanonStudio.prefs in the
CanonStudio_Prefs directory. The CanonStudio settings are saved
in the specified file every time you click on the Save Settings
gadget in CanonStudio.
Please note that CanonStudio also stores its server, default and
output module preferences files in the CanonStudio_Prefs drawer.
If you specify a different preferences file than CanonStudio.prefs
in the CanonStudio_Prefs drawer, CanonStudio will still use the
other preferences files saved in that drawer. If you specify a
prefernces file in a different drawer, CanonStudio tries to locate
the other preferences file in that drawer also.
This way you can choose between different CanonStudio preferences
with the same output module configuration, or not.
PUBSCREEN
CanonStudio opens a window on the default public screen. You may
specify a special public screen by setting the Tool Type
PUBSCREENscreen name The screen name is case sensitive. and the
CanonStudio program will open its windows on your application's
screen.
TOPAZ
CanonStudio is font independent. All text is displayed using the
system font. If TOPAZ is specified, only the topaz 8 font is
used.
REXX
CanonStudio will open an ARexx port after all the files specified
during the startup procedure have been processed.
NOFILEREQ
If files are specified during startup, these will be processed and
a filerequester will appear asking for further files to print.
The filerequester will not appear until all the files specified
during the startup procedure have been processed. If REXX has not
been specified, CanonStudio is then terminated.
SCALE | NOSCALE
If SCALE (default) is used, a check is made as to whether the IFF
ILBM CMAP (colormap) chunk of a file is shifted or scaled. Some
applications (DeluxePaint 4.1, for example) write their color
values shifted (0xF0) instead of scaled (0xFF), causing colors to
be printed too dark. By default you should start CanonStudio with
the SCALE option. Newer programs write their color values scaled
(Art Department Professional, for example). In general, don't
worry about this setting unless you get light greys printed in
areas that should be white. You can disable the check by
specifying NOSCALE.
SERVER=Servername
This keyword is used by applications that are able to use
CanonStudio's or Studio's server link. This feature is only
available in the registered version of CanonStudio.
CanonStudio for beginners
-------------------------
After starting CanonStudio a file requester opens asking you to
select IFF files for printing. You can avoid the file requester
by specifying files as arguments on Shell startup, and/or by using
the NOFILEREQ option described above.
If you start CanonStudio from Workbench the file requester can be
avoided by multi-selecting the picture icons. See your Amiga
system manual for more information about multi-selection.
In either case, Shell or Workbench, a file requester does not
appear if you have already specified a picture file upon startup.
If no file is given, the file requester opens and you can
multiselect files for printing. Again, see your system manual for
multiselection.
If you are not sure about whether you want to print a particular
file, don't worry, unless you have specified the NOFILEREQ option,
on startup the file requester will appear again after processing
the selected files.
The Main CanonStudio Windows
----------------------------
After successfully selecting the file(s), the two main process
windows open. One window is sized as large as your monitor
allows. This window gives you an overview of the size of the
printing page, the picture size, and the position for printing.
You can use the mouse to position and size the picture on the
page.
The smaller window contains all the tools you need to control
colour, dithering method, etc. While dragging the picture in the
large main window by mouse, the values shown in the tools are
updated accordingly. Most of the tools don't need a great deal of
explanation. (But let's do it anyway.)
Paper Dimension:
----------------
These are two gadgets. One is showing you the width of the
maximum printable area of your printer, as specified by the
printer driver Canon drivers allow you to specify this width as
Custom ResX. This gadget is read-only. The other gadget defines
the height of the maximum printable area of your printer. This
setting is defined as the physical area of the page that can be
printed on. For instance, if you have DIN A4 paper with a size of
21.0cm * 29.7cm and your printer always leaves a top and bottom
border of 1cm, you should enter 27.7cm here.
Ruler Dimension:
----------------
Ruler Dimension defines the area shown in the large main window.
The number of pages shown in the window depends on the Ruler
Dimension setting. You should try to adjust the aspect of the
Ruler Dimension to your screen mode and aspect of the paper being
used. This avoids possible mistakes when choosing a Print
Dimension.
The height of the ruler cannot be altered if you enable KEEP
ASPECT in the WINDOW ASPECT menu item. CanonStudio makes sure the
print page shown in the larger window always has the correct
aspect by altering the ruler height depending on the window width.
CanonStudio uses the operation system for finding out the screen
aspect required for this calculation. If you use a graphics board
with a Workbench emulation, this calculation may fail if the
Workbench emulation is not set-up correctly. Choose a Workbench
screen mode with an aspect ratio that matches the real screen size
being emulated.
Page Dimension:
---------------
Now that you have defined the maximum print area of your printer
for a given paper size, you may define the required subpage size.
For example, you may want to decrease the printable size if you
have a DIN A4 sized paper with logo at the top which should never
be overprinted. Let's say the logo is at the top border position
and is 2cm in height. Now you should reduce the print height from
Paper Dimension by 2 (that is, to 25.7cm) and define a border of
2cm at the top ( Page Dimension Y = 2cm).
Print Dimension:
----------------
Lastly we have the actual print size of the picture. There is
almost no limit to the size that can be specified here. Just be
sure the upper left-hand corner of the picture will be printed on
the first page (If not, you'll get an error requester anyway.).
The Print Dimensions X will be applied to all of the left-most
pages in a poster print. All of the top-most pages of a poster
print will be affected by the Print Dimensions Y setting.
Density:
--------
This gadget in the upper right of the window shows you the
densities supported by the printer driver. Select the required
density by clicking with the mouse on the gadget. If you are
using the Canon printer drivers, try using Density 1 and/or 2
instead of 6 and/or 7. This ensures that the colour adjustments
and dither routines of the driver are not used.
Col:
B/W:
----
Below the Density gadget you'll find the Color and B/W gadget.
This allows you to select the output of a colour picture as
greyscale or colour. If you select colour and your printer driver
does not support colour, greyscale is used automatically.
CanonStudio automatically forces you to use b/w in this case.
Color:
------
A window will open when you click on this gadget. This window
(see figure colset ) contains many sliders that enable you to
control the colour, brightness, and more, of your picture. While
most functions are simple to use, some notes should be made:
The Gamma slider allows you to brighten a picture without losing
too much detail. Owners of printers with dot gain problems (most
"cheap" printers USD <3000 have dot gain problems!) should use
this slider to increase the brightness of the output. Generally
you should select a value in the range 20 to 30 to increase the
brightness.
The Weighs sliders are important for printing colour pictures on
monochrome printers. The colour components of the colour picture
are weighted according to the slider settings. What are weights
good for? Well, a red and green pixel, both with the same colour
value of 50, do not have the same luminance when they are
displayed on a colour monitor. Most likely the green will appear
brighter, due to the way monitor tubes are built. Because of
this, when converting a colour picture displayed on a monitor to a
greyscale picture for printing, you have to consider the different
weights (luminances) of the tube colours. By default CanonStudio
uses the weights as defined by the NTSC and PAL standards. If you
have scanned a picture with an RGB scanner, the colours are not
weighted to these standards and are most likely weighted equally.
In this case all sliders should be set to 3333 (that is, 33.33%)
resulting in a total weight of 100%. The total weighting may
exceed 100 percent.
Dit.:
-----
You can use the Dit. gadget to open the dither window. The
dither window contains all the gadgets required for selecting or
defining the desired dither method for printing. CanonStudio
includes more than 50 of the latest dither methods, covered later
in a separate chapter.
Note that you can select different dither methods for color and
greyscale output in the dither window. The current dither method
is shown on the right-hand side of the Dit. gadget and is
automatically updated if you change the shading of the output.
Set Aspect:
-----------
When you click on this gadget CanonStudio automatically sets the
print height of your picture to a value so that your printed
picture has the correct aspect ratio. This requires a correct
aspect ratio or DPI chunk saved in your picture. After setting
the correct aspect ratio, a circle would be printed as circle and
a square would be printed as square, no matter what the physical
aspect of the printer's dots are.
See error chapter for possible problems caused by pictures saved
with Art Department Professional.
Starting Page:
--------------
If you are printing a poster you may define the page to start
printing with. This is especially useful if you had some trouble
with the printer in the middle of the print job (out of paper?),
and you wish to restart the printing with the page that aborted.
Copies:
-------
Enables you to define the number of copies of the picture you wish
to print. Canon LBP users should note that the Copies value set
in CanonPref is faster, but the pages are printed in a different
sequence.
Port:
Land:
-----
Use the Port or Land cycle gadget to select the output format
Portrait or Landscape. Please note that it is a major feature of
the registered CanonStudio that it is able to print in landscape
mode without requiring much memory.
Effect:
-------
The effect window is only usable in the registered version of
CanonStudio and allows you to control the image enhancement
functions of CanonStudio.
Match:
Monitor:
--------
The Match and Monitor windows are for controlling the Color
Management System of the registered version of CanonStudio.
Print:
------
After all settings have been made in the main process window, you
can click on the Print button. A small status window will appear,
telling you the number of pages, copies and (after some seconds)
the estimated printing time. The estimated printing time is not
very precise at the beginning of a print. It may require a little
while before the remaining time shown is more accurate.
CanonStudio includes a printer spooler of its own. Because of
this you can keep selecting pictures for printing while the
printer is still actually printing. If you selected multiple
pictures on startup, the main window will appear with the next
picture file. After defining the print size of all previously
specified pictures, the file requester appears again.
Save Settings:
--------------
There is almost no limit to how many print jobs can be defined!
You can define the priority of the printing process on startup of
CanonStudio and save all setting by clicking on the Save Setting
gadget. If you set this priority to less than zero (the default
is -1), printing is done in the background there by enabling you
to use your Amiga as desired for other tasks. (Except powering
off, of course.)
Quit:
-----
You can terminate CanonStudio by clicking on the file requester's
close gadget or the Quit gadget.
The Studio Menu
The CanonStudio Menu
--------------------
The smaller main window of CanonStudi offers a menu with
additional functions.
Hint: If you have activated the larger (picture positioning)
window of CanonStudio, press any character key and the smaller
window will become active again. After this you can use keyboard
short-cuts or the mouse for accessing the menu.
The PROJECT menu allows you to start or cancel printing of the
current image. In both cases, the two CanonStudio windows will be
closed and the filerequester will pop up again for further file
selections, unless you specified NOFILEREQ while starting
CanonStudio.
The SETTINGS menu is very similar to the Workbench preferences
programs. You can load or save any CanonStudio settings. Reset
to Default activates the settings defined by the
``DefaultSettings'' file saved in the CanonStudio_Prefs drawer.
This file is usually installed by the CanonStudio installation
process in order to set-up CanonStudio for your printer. You can
alter the default setting any time by using the Save As menu item.
CanonStudio will use internal default settings if no
``DefaultSettings'' file is available. CanonStudio saves its user
settings in a file named CanonStudio.prefs unless a different
setting file has been specified during startup. This file is
saved every time you use the Save menu item or click on the Save
Settings gadget. Last Saved causes CanonStudio to re-read and
enable the settings saved in the file. Please note that
CanonStudio uses a different setting file if it has been started
from another application as a server. You can use the Open menu
item to load your usual settings saved in CanonStudio.prefs or any
other previously saved setting file.
You can use the OUTPUT menu for selecting and controlling the
output module. Each output module has its own configuration
window, described by the manual of the registered CanonStudio.
This PAPER TYPE menu item does the same as the Workbench Printer
preferences Paper Type gadget. If SINGLE is selected, a formfeed
is sent after each page. FANFOLD should be used for endless
(rolled, fanfold, continuous...) paper. MANUAL REQUEST is similar
to Single except that the program will ask you to insert a page
each time before printing is started. This is useful if you use
special paper with your printer which has to be fed in manually.
If you have a single-sheet printer (like a laser printer) you can
use Fanfold to print multiple pictures on to one page. However
this does not necessarily work with all CanonStudio output modules
or Workbench drivers. In the case of the Workbench module it is
often very important that the Workbench driver is not cleared from
memory between the two dumps. When memory is low, or if driver
setting have been changed, the driver is usually automatically
cleared from memory by the system. To find out if this
``overlay'' feature works for you, simply try it. Just be sure to
set the Page and Paper Dimension correctly.
The PRINT PRIORITY menu item controls the priority of the
CanonStudio print process. Most Amiga applications use a priority
of zero. A program with a higher priority usually gets all the
computing time available; if any computing time is left it is used
by the programs with a lower priority.
CanonStudio uses a default priority of -1 (minus one). This means
you can use your applications without any major speed losses,
while CanonStudio takes advantage of all the unused computing time
for printing in background. If you a priority of 0 (zero) for
CanonStudio, it will share equally the computing time with all
your multitasked applications. If a priority of 1 (one) is used,
CanonStudio will get all the computing time for printing, and only
the computing time left over is used by other applications (thus
drastically slowing them down when in use).
If you have several applications running and CanonStudio is
printing with a low priority, it is very likely that printing will
get suddenly and dramatically slower if you actually work with
your applications. CanonStudio may even stop printing for several
minutes. If you want your printouts fast and don't mind using
your multitasked application slowly, use a priority of zero or one
for CanonStudio.
The CONFIG menu provides settings that control the user interface
and CanonStudio's internal print process. MEASUREMENT allows you
to select the measurement system used in all CanonStudio windows
and output modules.
Note: 72.27 points are equal to an inch but most software (like
DTP programs) assume exactly 72 points for an inch so to avoid
possible rounding errors and improve calculation speed.
CanonStudio offers both measurement systems. 72 DTPPoints are
equal to one inch. One pica is equal to 12 points.
Some image formats (IFF ILBM, JPEG) allow within the file the
storage of information about the size of the image. You can use
the ORIGINAL IMAGE SIZE menu item to automatically set the
printing size of CanonStudio to the original image size. For
instance, scan a 2in by 2in sized image with ADPro and a flatbed
scanner. Save it as an IFF ILBM picture, load it into CanonStudio
and select Original Image Size. This will set the print size to
2in by 2in in CanonStudio.
The ORIGINAL IMAGE SIZE menu item is only available if the image
file contains the required information, otherwise the menu item
will be ghosted. Please note that some applications may save
faulty size information based on bad assumptions about the image
size and aspect.
MAX PAGE PRINT SIZE is a very useful menu item. Use it for
automatically setting paper, page and print dimensions to their
maximum allowed values. The maximum size depends on the settings
in the output module. So if the paper size doesn't work on your
printer, check the paper size in the output module. It's a good
habit to select Max Page Print Size and afterwards Set Aspect
before printing. This will print the image with the maximum
possible size and a correct aspect.
CanonStudio will automatically call SET ASPECT every time you select
a picture if ADJUST ON STARTUP is enabled (with a checkmark next
to it). If you don't want CanonStudio to change the height of the
printed image every time you select an image, disable Adjust on
Startup.
The height of the ruler dimension cannot be altered if you enable
KEEP ASPECT in the WINDOW ASPECT menu item. CanonStudio makes
sure the print page shown in the larger window always has the
correct aspect by altering the ruler height depending on the
window width. CanonStudio uses the operation system for finding
out the screen aspect required for this calculation. If you use a
graphics board with a Workbench emulation, the calculation may
fail if the Workbench emulation is not set-up correctly. Choose a
Workbench screen mode with an aspect that matches the real screen
size being emulated.
It is very likely that one of the two main CanonStudio windows
will be covered by other windows while you work with CanonStudio.
Use the menu item WINDOW TO FRONT or Amiga-f to bring the
CanonStudio windows back in front.
The MEMORY USAGE menu item has a major influence on the memory
requirement and printing speed of CanonStudio. Using the default
Normal setting, CanonStudio tries to avoid using memory whenever
possible without losing too much (or any) print speed. If your
Amiga doesn't have much memory available you might have to set the
menu item to Low in order to prevent low memory error messages
during print time.
CanonStudio should run perfectly well with 1 MBytes of free
memory. However, you can trade memory for print speed. Certain
functions run much faster if your Amiga has several megabytes of
free memory and Memory Usage has been set to High. In any case,
CanonStudio always tries to leave some memory unused so that you
can multitask other applications while printing in the background.
The COLOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM menu allows you to open the two main
windows for setting up the color management system. The Printer
Profile gadget opens the same window as the Match gadget of the
smaller main window -- the Match window. The Monitor gadget in
the Match window opens the same window as the Source/Monitor menu
item. Both windows are described in the registered CanonStudio
manual.
The Status Window
-----------------
The status window appears on startup of CanonStudio and remains
open until you quit CanonStudio. While printing, the window is
sized to its maximum size, and shrunk to a small bar when not
printing. The status window displays the current print job in
progress and estimated printing time. Two gadgets exist in this
window and both are active if a picture is being printed:
"Abort" the printing of all pictures.
"Skip" skips the current picture, and printing will start with the
next picture. A requester appears to make sure your printer is
ready for the next picture in case there was a problem printing
the previous picture.
CanonStudio And Printer Drivers
-------------------------------
CanonStudio was designed to work with all proper written Amiga
printer drivers, though, CanonStudio is limited to Workbench Canon
drivers only. If you want a version that works with every driver,
get the commercial Studio Printer Software from your dealer. If
the printer driver supports its own kind of colour adjustment or
dither routines, turn them off! If you are using one of the
CanonStudio drivers this can be easily done by printing using
density 1 or 2.
Errors and Fixes
================
If you can't solve a problem with the software, a "Report" program
can be found on the CanonDisk. Report prints all driver and
CanonStudio settings to a specified disk. Simply return that disk
and any further details or samples to the author. Very often in
the past users didn't supply enough information to help us find
the cause of the problem. Please, use Report and give us any
detail or file you have involved in your problem.
Report also performs some further system checks. A requester will
appear if there is something wrong with your system.
Here is a list of things you should supply when asking for help:
- A disk holding the Report output files.
- Which application program version do you use.
- Which Workbench revision you are using.
- Include a faulty dump of the program, as a file (use the CMD
program from the Workbench disk for this) and in printed form.
- Include the image you try to print from CanonStudio.
Note: any report disks or samples are not returned unless
requested. Too often, returning a disk would cost more postage in
Germany than buying a new disk. Also note: include postage if
you want an answer. Stupid questions well covered by this or the
system manual are not answered.
Set Aspect doesn't work?
This problem will most likely happen to CanonStudio users with
pictures saved by Art Department Professional. Clicking on Set
Aspect does not set the correct aspect ratio of the image for
printing. Usually the width of the image is too small, or the
picture is too tall to put it another way. Make sure Art
Department Professional saves the correct aspect ratio by using
its Set Pixel Aspect operator. The dpi values saved by Art
Department Professional are importend for the Set Aspect
function..
To dark pictures?
If your graphic dumps are too dark or wrongly colored, it may be
because you are using a bad papre with the wrong kind of dither
method. Try increasing the gamma slider in the color window.
However, the only real cure to this problem is done by the Color
Managament System available in the registered version of
CanonStudio.
Altered print height?
In case the print height is altered everytime you select a picture
in CanonStudio, check your ADJUST ON STARTUP setting in the menu
of the smaller main window.
